Progressive Preschool Awards Finalists Announced

The Joester Loria Group develops global marketing initiatives that deliver brand enhancement and engagement for its clients.  A recent example developed for The World of Eric Carle was nominated for The Progressive Preschool Awards in the UK. In Spring of 2014, the Giant Wiggle was launched in partnership with UK charity Action for Children, as a fundraising campaign that brought children under five together in caterpillar conga lines and encouraged them to play and develop their imaginations through storytelling and creativity.  The event was tied to the brand’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s 45th anniversary celebration and is a finalist in the Progressive Preschool Awards marketing category.

The Progressive Preschool Awards highlight creativity in the preschool industry in the UK. The awards include ten retail categories, nine product categories and one marketing award. The retail categories include best supermarket retailer, best mixed retailer, the best multiple retailer, the best department store retailer, best online retailer, best retail initiative, best independent nursery retailer, best independent toy retailer, best independent apparel retailer and the best independent gift retailer.   A full list of this year’s finalists is available on the Progressive Preschool site. Winners will be revealed at this year’s award ceremony, which will take place on Thursday, November 13 at The Dorchester Hotel in London.

The finalists were selected by an independent validation panel made up of marketing and communication experts who thoroughly discussed each initiative before the campaigns were voted on to arrive at the six finalists and eventual winner.

The Joester Loria Group Expands The World of Eric Carle’s Licensing Program

The Joester Loria Group brokered a new deal for their client, The World of Eric Carle, to expand on their current licensing program with additional categories including stationery, craft and activity paper products and confections for the U.S. and Canada.

Through the deal, Primary Colors will develop an extensive line utilizing the much-loved The Very Hungry Caterpillar along with other iconic characters from Carle’s beloved books to create a collection of stationery, craft and school supplies, which will arrive at retail Spring 2015.

Capturing the playful theme of the World of Eric Carle, the new line will emphasize the iconic collage art in a wide variety of products including:  coloring pouches, coloring packs, craft kits, activity pads, stickers, markers, crayons, glue sticks, scissors and flash cards.

Additionally, Primary Colors will be developing everyday and seasonal confections including gummies and fruit snacks along with cookies and crackers.  The cookies and crackers will be made in America.

Distribution of the new products will target a wide range of outlets, such as grocery stores, independent specialty stores, specialty chains, mass market retailers and online stores.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar App Tops The Charts

After a successful launch earlier this year, The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ & Friends – Play & Explore app from StoryToys has now surpassed 100,000 downloads across all platforms as of the end of August. The app debuted on March 20th – The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day – as part of the celebration of the iconic book’s 45th anniversary. The Very Hungry Caterpillar app is designed for pre-schoolers to inspire imaginative thinking and encourage creative exploration, and is ideal for parents and children to share. This 3-D pop up app features a variety of Eric Carle’s popular characters in eight different games that teach children important skills like counting, sorting and healthy eating habits.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Partners With Produce For Kids

Produce for Kids is excited to announce a new partnership with The Very Hungry Caterpillar™ for its third annual Healthy Families, Helping Kids campaign this fall. The campaign, running in all Meijer stores and Publix Super Markets this September and October, will raise funds to support local children’s charities. The partnership was brokered on behalf of the World of Eric Carle by its worldwide licensing agent, The Joester Loria Group.

“We’re so excited to be partnering with The Very Hungry Caterpillar this fall. As a classic, it connects to both parents who read the story as children and children today who are reading it for the first time,” said Trish James, vice president, Produce for Kids. “Through our in-store campaign, we can help shoppers make smart decisions and feed their families healthy meals with wholesome ingredients.”

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a classic book by Eric Carle, is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year and will be featured on in-store signage in more than 1,200 grocery stores and fresh markets in 11 states. Signage will notify shoppers of all participating produce companies and point them for additional information on the campaign, more than 150 produce-centered recipes and healthy tips from real parents.

The Healthy Families, Helping Kids campaign will run from September through October 2014 with the support of more than 20 participating fresh fruit and vegetable suppliers, representing every major category of fresh produce. Suppliers will make a consumption-based donation to local children’s charities. The more items from participating companies that shoppers purchase, the more local children’s organizations benefit.

Produce for Kids will promote the campaign through all social media platforms and will host various sweepstakes and giveaways on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Produce for Kids will also engage mom bloggers in each participating retail partner’s markets to help spread the healthy eating message. In addition, Produce for Kids will be hosting monthly Twitter parties during the campaign focused on seasonal healthy eating topics. The Very Hungry Caterpillar will also be hosting in-store meet and greets with families at select participating grocery stores.

The ShopRite in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey recently hosted one of the first Very Hungry Caterpillar in store events on August 18th. More than 35 kids and their parents gathered for a cooking demo of healthy foods featured in the iconic book and a meet and greet with the famous caterpillar himself.

New Poll Celebrates The 45th Anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the classic children’s picture book written and illustrated by world renowned children’s author, Eric Carle is celebrating its 45th Anniversary this year.

To mark the book’s 45 year anniversary, The World of Eric Carle commissioned a poll which asked more than 2,000 UK parents and children what ten foods they would choose for the hungry caterpillar to eat if the book was written today. The overall top ten foods families chose for the hungry caterpillar to eat included a wide range of options such as bananas, carrot sticks, broccoli, pasta, burgers, fish fingers, eggs and soldiers, porridge, chips and cheese strings. Some surprising results from the poll include:

·         UK kids opted for a number of healthy foods when choosing what they would like the hungry caterpillar to eat. Bananas came top of the list and were voted the most popular food choice by over 67.2% of 2-16 year olds.

·         Out of the 1000 UK children polled, foods such as carrot sticks, porridge and broccoli all made it into the top ten for the hungry caterpillar to eat if they had written the book today.

·         Mediterranean snacks are more popular with kids than may have been anticipated. 1 in 5 children chose olives for the hungry caterpillar to munch on.

·         A third of UK dads voted for Hungry Caterpillar to eat sushi which didn’t make the top ten lists of either moms or children.

·         String cheese proved popular with both parents and children. Parents voted it as the 10th top food (41.10%) and the fifth most popular for children (60.3%).

·         Unsurprisingly, parents’ overall top 3 choices were the healthy food options: bananas (73.4% ), carrot sticks (66.5%) and broccoli (65.7%).

The poll also revealed that not only would UK families choose The Very Hungry Caterpillar as the most memorable book from their childhood, they would also pick it as the No. 1 book to read to their children. Results are as follows:

·         Nearly half of the 1000 UK children aged between 2-16 years who were polled voted for The Very Hungry Caterpillar as the most memorable book from their childhood.

·         UK children also voted The Very Hungry Caterpillar as the number one book to read to their children when they grow up.

·         Over 2 in 5 parents chose The Very Hungry Caterpillar as their most memorable childhood book

·         The Very Hungry Caterpillar was also the number one book chosen by UK moms to read to their children (65.5%)

·         Children based in the East of England voted The Very Hungry Caterpillar to be their most memorable book with over a half (56.8%) agreeing.

The World of Eric Carle Partners With Action For Children

Leading UK charity Action for Children has teamed up with best-selling children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar and BBC host Angellica Bell to get children under five involved in a sponsored walk to help other children in a fundraising event called The Giant Wiggle. Action for Children provides early childhood development, learning and childcare services to thousands of children throughout the UK, through its children’s and family centers.

To launch the annual event, Angellica was at St. Pancras station in central London, along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar himself and children, wiggling in a conga line.

The charity is encouraging children’s centers, nurseries and groups for children under five throughout the UK to host sponsored Giant Wiggle events on The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, March 20, 2014. The day, celebrated annually, marks the start of the 45th anniversary celebration of Eric Carle’s beloved book and 2014 marks Action for Children’s 145th year.
