Highlights From the 13th Annual Carle Honors

In 2002, Eric and Bobby Carle founded the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, which is dedicated to picture books, as works of art and for their educational value. On September 27, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art hosted the 13th Annual Carle Honors at Guastavino’s in New York City. The event celebrates individuals and organizations helping to advance the picture book art form.  Eric Carle himself was on hand to mingle with more than 300 guests and honorees. This year’s theme was Rapunzel, as a nod to one of the evening’s award winners, Paul O. Zelinsky. Carle’s iconic Very Hungry Caterpillar was also featured prominently, since next year marks the 50th anniversary of the beloved character.

This year’s honors went to the following individuals and organizations:

  • The Bologna Children’s Book Fair was awarded the Bridge Award, which was accepted by Elena Pasoli.

  • The Sendak Fellowship & Workshop received the Angel Award, accepted by Lynn Caponera and Dona Ann McAdams. The organization develops young writers and illustrators through artist residencies.

  • Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop was honored with the Mentor Award. Sims Bishop is an  influential children’s literature scholar and author who is a champion of diversity in picture books.

  • Paul O. Zelinsky won the Artist Award. Zelinsky is a Caldecott winner and the artist known for works such as Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin.

The festivities also included the Carle Honors Art Auction, which raises funds for the museum’s mission of inspiring a love of art and reading through picture books. Additionally, the evening also featured a surprise performance by funk band Funkrust Brass Band.
